Locally Grown! The theme of the 86th Annual Yorktown Grange Fair highlights the contribution of the local farms and achievements of local businesses. This year the fair will be on September 9, 10, 11 and 12.
Locally grown food tastes better, is better for the environment and better for the local economy. Since the Grange Fair began, the purpose has been to encourage the community to exhibit their best in a variety of categories and has provided a showcase for the town’s people to “show off” their home grown (or homemade) goods, whether vegetables, flowers, needlework, baking, photography, livestock or poultry. The “produce and vegetable auction” signaling the end of the fair, is always a favorite.
This year, in keeping with the theme of Locally Grown, visitors to the fair will be able to sample food demonstrations (made with local ingredients) from local chefs and restaurants that will take place in the commercial tent area. The Grange Fair is honored to welcome chef and restaurateur Jonathan Pratt, owner of Peter Pratt’s Inn in Yorktown Heights and Umami Café in Croton on Hudson. Mr. Pratt was named Best Green Chef by Westchester Magazine in 2009 and will be one of the judges for the baking contest.
Area farms, including Stuarts Farm in Granite Springs and Meadows Farm in Yorktown Heights, will host booths and create displays with their locally grown vegetables and flowers.
Backyard gardeners are an important part of "Locally Grown." Our produce and flower competitions provide our neighbors with the opportunity to show the fruits of their summer gardens — and maybe take home the blue ribbon!
Livestock is an important component of local agriculture and the Grange Fair provides a unique opportunity to enjoy the beauty and nobility of animals from area farms. We are excited to have oxen coming again to the Fair this year. These beautiful, huge animals were a big hit last year...and the massive draft horses coming to the fair this year will also be a "big" attraction.
Nine farms will be exhibiting livestock, including some adorable baby animals. We are expecting cows, pigs, chickens, goats, sheep and more. The horse club is planning shows in the ring, featuring a variety of riding techniques and stunts, from barrel racing to parading.
We have planned very special entertainment and attractions for this year's fair, including Chase's Racing Pigs! Loved and lovable, four miniature pot-bellied pigs run through their racetrack to the cheers of the audience. The last show of the day is a "piggy bi-athalon," with a swimming competition added to the race. The races will be held during the day and evening from Thursday through Sunday.
Our expanded musical line-up features local favorites and some new faces, in addition to circus acts which delight our audiences, young and old. Please see the entertainment section for more information.
Highlights of the fair also include the horse show exhibition, audience participation games such as pie eating, watermelon eating and nail driving, carnival rides, variety show and live entertainment. This year’s expanded musical line-up features local favorites and some new faces, in addition to circus acts which delight our audiences, young and old.
As always you'll enjoy the flower and produce tents featuring home-grown produce and lovely bouquets; and photo, baking, needlework and lego contests in the Grange building. Our fair midway will once again feature exciting rides and attractions, and the best fair food around. We are looking forward to "seeing you in September."
